The conversation every family should have before move-in day.

Campus Title IX investigations can escalate quickly and carry serious academic, professional, and legal consequences — even when your son has done nothing wrong. This handbook prepares your family before college, not after a complaint is filed.

No One Talks About This at Orientation

Title IX — originally enacted to support gender equality in athletics — now governs how universities handle accusations of sexual misconduct. Campus investigations operate under administrative procedures that differ significantly from criminal courts, typically applying a preponderance-of-the-evidence standard with procedural safeguards that differ from criminal proceedings.

In the course of our research, we interviewed dozens of falsely accused students, their families, and their attorneys. A pattern emerged: accusations often followed breakups, social conflicts, or situations where both parties later described events very differently. The consequences were severe — suspension, expulsion, transcript flags, criminal charges, and lasting damage to futures and reputations.

Every family we interviewed said the same thing: they had no idea this could happen.

This handbook exists so your family doesn’t have to say that.

Written by Researchers.
Informed by Families Who’ve Been Through It.

We conducted targeted interviews with students who were falsely accused, their parents, and their attorneys to identify what works — and what families wish they’d known before college.

Written in two editions — one for students, one for parents — so your family can prepare together. Each edition covers understanding the Title IX landscape, communication and digital literacy, situational awareness and boundaries, emotional health, legal preparation, and what to do if a complaint is filed.

Every chapter includes anonymized case studies drawn from real interviews, practical checklists, and hard-won advice. In the cases we examined for this handbook, the students described the encounters as consensual or involving no intimate contact.

Who It’s For

For Students

Heading to college? Your university’s Title IX policy governs your life on campus — and it may not work the way you think. An accusation of sexual misconduct can lead to suspension, expulsion, a flag on your transcript, and criminal charges — even in situations involving no intimate contact. Read this before you set foot on campus. Learn to recognize risky situations, protect yourself, and know exactly what to do if someone files a complaint against you.

For Parents

Sending a son to college? There is a risk that escaped most parents’ radar. Campus Title IX investigations carry consequences that can alter a young man’s academic career, professional future, and mental health. This is the handbook orientation doesn’t include. Understand what your son may face, prepare him before he goes, and know what immediate steps to take if a complaint is ever filed.
